FROM CHISTOPHER'S DIARY
(Year of the census of the Roman Empire)
My goodness me! We are always in a hurry! Where are we going this time? I said in that occasion but my doubts disappeared as soon as I realised that finally we were going back home… all the way from Egypt!
But to understand why we were in Egypt we have to go back to the day in which Joseph knew that Herod was looking for the baby to kill him. It had been a heavy trip since we had almost to run to save our lives. Climbing up hills and mountains, sleeping only a few hours every night and back to the road again. The emotion was anyway so intense that tiredness was not a burden. And the time we spent in Egypt was not so bad.
What I did not understand ‑I said to myself since I couldn't speak to anybody else‑ is why this baby and his mother were so heavy! Nevertheless I'm proud to be the donkey of this family, they have something special that I like. Is it Jesus? Is it Mary? I don't know for sure, but I like it anyway.
And I want to write about this. This year we have had a lot of travelling! Oh yes! I remember that I had to bring Mary from Nazareth to the mountains of Judea. It was the first trip I did with Mary and just to start the tradition ‑I remember very well‑ also that trip was set up in a hurry. We went to visit Elisabeth, a relative of Mary who was pregnant. I remember very well the words of Mary: "We have to go as soon as possible, she might need my help." In that occasion I felt for the first time that Mary was heavier than before. I understood the reason some months later, going back to Nazareth: Mary was also waiting for a baby! This filled my heart with happiness. Children are always nice!
I realised that since Mary came to Joseph's house, life changed a lot. It was easier before, just a couple of trips a week to the nearby towns to bring wood for the workshop and to deliver chairs, doors and tables. Anyway I enjoyed all the trips! Not only because of the very special passenger I was carrying ‑You know, Mary was a beautiful girl, certainly more beautiful than a queen! but also because I was proud to be Joseph's donkey.
But I have to tell you about the day in which we went to Bethlehem. Why there? ‑I grumbled that day‑ It is only a small town in the mountains! And It's cold there now! And Mary is pregnant! And anyway Nazareth is bigger and nicer! It's an imprudence! I thought, but I'm only a donkey and probably I cannot understand yet many things.
Oh yes!, I remember very well that as we were approaching Bethlehem I was longing for some food and a nice rest but… My goodness me! ‑I complained after knocking to many doors‑ why people are so stubborn? They say that donkeys like me are stubborn, but why they don't accept a poor lady who is about to deliver… and we were just asking for a corner in the house… and a corner in the stable for me of course!
In the end we rushed also in that very moment to a stable, but not for me! It was a clean place where Joseph settled up things in a few minutes to welcome the baby.
Oh yes! I remember very well, some shepherds came and shared their cheese, bread and milk with Mary and Joseph. It was a wonderful night, with a big star shining in the sky. Oh yes! All my efforts had been well worth! It was a nice baby, born in the city of King David recognised only by the poor people of the countryside, even though ‑I remember very well‑ three kings from Orient came to pay a visit to us.
I am proud to say I was the one who brought Joseph, Mary and Jesus there!
It was a very interesting year anyway. I had the opportunity to go to the mountains of Judea where I spent three full months of vacation!, I made return to the land of my ancestors, Bethlehem, Egypt and now back to Nazareth… and always rushing!
Yes, I realise that somehow I am a very important donkey; probably ‑forgive me this‑ the most important donkey in the history.
Some day I will have my calling card and I will write on it something like this:
Christopher
(From the Greek: The One Who Bring Jesus)
The donkey that brought Jesus to the world…
Ready to bring Jesus and his Mother anywhere all around the world
Nazareth (for the time being)
Philippines Branch: Christopher's Carabao Association
If only donkeys and carabaos were able to speak, we would shout this wonderful story to the whole world!
I'm looking forward to more adventures with this wonderful family. Our next destiny? Who knows! Probably Jerusalem. I know we have to go there when Jesus will be twelve years old. And I hope we will not have to rush then!
Christopher
Merry Christmas to all!!!
